Sorsatunturi fell

Sorsatunturi, rising 629 metres above sea level, is the highest fell in Salla. It is located right on the Russian border, level with Lake Naruskajärvi and to the east of it. The UKK trail runs to Sorsatunturi, meaning it can be approached from both the south and the north. The closest you can get to Sorsatunturi by car is just under ten kilometres, by following the road along the north bank of the Sorsajoki to its end off the Naruskantie. The road is open in summer. In winter, a snowmobile trail follows the same route, which can be skied all the way to Sorsatunturi.

At the foot of Sorsatunturi there is a kota (fire shelter) with a fireplace. South of the kota there is also a Metsähallitus booking cabin.

The view from the summit of Sorsatunturi is simply magnificent in every direction. Conquering Sorsatunturi on foot or on skis can easily take a full day if you make the round trip. Some old maps carry an outdated marking of the Sorsatunturi kota's location. It was previously near Vaarinkehuma cabin but was relocated a few years ago about three kilometres to the north. The old Vaarinkehuma cabin no longer exists either — it has been demolished. It is worth updating old maps to new editions so that rest stops and overnight shelters can be found without error.
